Today I taught my first graders about what a flower needs to grow. We discussed plant food versus people food. I had the students tell me what they eat for lunch and dinner, then I had them guess what they thought a plant needs to grow big and strong. I made a chart for them to sort pictures of food into plant food and people food. Next, I had them Plants Need pictures. I wanted to use a lot of sensory stimulating materials for my students who have a great need for that. I had them cut thick paper, glue cotton balls, and sprinkle soil on their paper. This is helpful when we are working on touch math, and they need it for the CAPA. Our theme this week is Spring so I thought a caterpillar was appropriate. I just made a word document with the numbers in circles, colored and cut them, used a hole punch and white yarn to attach the numbers then slapped it on a 12x18 in piece of construction paper. I am going to make the small/big/less/more words stand out more when I do this with my students tomorrow. My plan is to print, cut, and paste onto a red paper so it is more visual. I am also going to make the word big much larger than the word small. I always do my projects myself the day before to see where any kinks may be so I can fix them before I work with my students. It also helps me plan what order would be the easiest for my students to complete it in, and where they may need more help. I’ll post the results tomorrow!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I was looking to find a planner/lesson plan book to use when I started leading the classroom I am student teaching in. BUT With my student teacher salary of zero dollars a year, I am broke and cannot afford such luxuries. I searched pinterest and found a great example of making your own lesson plan book. The set up is time consuming, but it only cost me three dollars to make. I think it is well worth it. Below the photos is the link to the original tutorial, which is much more adorable than mine. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;coffee filter&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;green straws&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;leaf cut outs&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;twine &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;vocabulary word list &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;popcorn kernels and brown rice&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;glue (liquid and stick), scissors, markers&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;water&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Procedure&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;I had my students color their coffee filter FLOWER first thing. Once they were colored, we sprinkled water over them to let the colors spread and blend. Put to the side to dry.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Next I had them color their LEAVES any shade of green that they wanted. Put to the side.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I gave each student a sheet of construction paper and a straw. Students used liquid glue to put their STEM on the paper. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Then the students used a glue stick to place their LEAVES coming off the stem.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Next I provided pre-cut pieces of thin twin for the ROOTS. I put a circle of liquid glue and the base of the STEM and let the students glue them on with the twine hanging down off the paper. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Then I had the students glue their dry FLOWER on the top of the stem. I put liquid glue in the middle and let the students sprinkle rice and popcorn kernels in the center. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Lastly, I gave each student the four vocabulary words for the parts of the plant to glue on and draw lines to the specific part. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;I just looked on google images for the leaves, but you can find the vocabulary boxes by clicking the link below.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I used this book to help introduce the concept to my students. I modified the writing part by highlighting the vocabulary words to trace for my students who are still developing their writing ability. &lt;/p&gt;
